Theme day: People Watching

After period of ignoring Theme Day due to changes in blog contributors and my personal laziness, we are back to participating in "Theme Day" challenges (many thanks to Artem for reminding!).

Today theme day is "People Watching". This group of people is on Moskva-river voyage observing the  banks and enjoying free time.

Theme Day: Action Shot

Action is in full speed. Man sells the lottery tickets and advertises through megaphone, woman looks at me suspiciously, the group of three.. - I do not know what they are doing near the "lost expectations" table.

The shot was taken near "Arbatskaya" metro station.

Theme Day: The Color Green

I think this qualifies as green - green building, green leaves, even a peek of green grass...! 

This is the entrance to an outdoor theater located in the All Russian Exhibition Center (more commonly known as VDNKh). VDNKh is a very, very large park and open air exhibition center, opened August 1, 1939. The park is filled with wonderful old buildings - each one dedicated to a specific industry or a Soviet Republic. I'll post more from this park throughout July. For now, enjoy a very green photo!

Theme Day: Under Construction

The building is under renovation. They cover the facade with protective fabrics with prints. I like how the balconies are incorporated into the printed images of the fabric.

Theme Day: Mailboxes

This month's theme is mailboxes - so here you are - a picture of typical Russian mailboxes!

They look like this in a lot of apartment buildings here, and are usually this shade of blue or a dark grey. 

The other common style is a flatter, horizontal mailbox. I had one of those at my old apartment.

Theme Day: My favorite part of town

Red Square is definitely my favorite part of Moscow. You see, I'm an American girl living here teaching English. To me, it's really special, as it was the first major landmark in Moscow I saw. I still remember walking through the gates and seeing the beautiful onion domes of Saint Basil's Cathedral  for the first time. I love coming here and just wandering around, staring at centuries of history. Needless to say, almost 1.5 years later, the novelty still hasn't worn off!

Now, for a little tour - on the right side, you can see part of the Kremlin wall and the Spasskaya Tower with it's iconic clock. At the end, there's the beautiful Saint Basil's Cathedral. On the left side, not very visible in this picture, there's the big shopping mall GUM, all lit up at night. Currently, there's also an ice skating rink which I absolutely love skating on! At the other end, there's the State History Museum in the center, and more of the Kremlin off to the left. The right side shows more of the ice skating rink.

Theme day: Fountains

It is challenging to find the right fountain in February in Moscow, too much snow everywhere... And I can not ignore the theme day, so here we are.

This fountain is located near the church where Alexander Pushkin (famous Russian poet) married his beautiful wife Natalia. And the figures of the couple dancing can be seen inside this marble "mushroom". The fountain, produced in 1999, is the example of new age of Moscow architecture.

That is how the author, architect Mikhail Belov explains how he tried to express his feeling of Pushkin in this creature:
"I wanted to make something in-between the antique temple and country mushroom, which miraculously grew up from the land, that was how I felt Pushkin".

Theme Day: Photo of the Year 2010

Alley of Peace in Park Pobedy

This photo was taken on December 30 in Park Pobedy (Victory Park), which is dedicated to the victory over the Nazis in the Great Patriotic War. It is a large and sprawling complex, with much to look at. It has ten main alleys, each dedicated to a different subject. Here is Alleya Mira, the Alley of Peace. This picture just seems peaceful to me - a couple walking arm in arm, surrounded by a world blanketed in snow and ice, with no one else around.

Theme day: Time

Time. Everyday it moves faster and faster. Do you believe it is 24 hours in a day? My 24 hours are 16 hours long, not more. Specially when I sit in front of monitor. Or is it because I am getting older and older? What about your time? Does it run? goes? crawl?

This clock returns me to the childhood, when my day was the size of a mountain.
I did this photo in September, on hand made exhibition.

Theme Day: Public Transportation

The Moscow metro has 4 special theme trains - pictured here is my favorite - the 'Reading Moscow' train. 

This inside of each wagon is painted, and on the walls there are excerpts and illustrations from many famous books and stories. It always makes me happy when I catch this train :) If you enlarge the picture below,
you can see one of the illustrations on the inside of the wagon!

The city attraction in graffiti at walls of water boiling station. It is sponsored by city authorities ("Krasnaya Presnya" district), which explains the choice of the objects: Building, Giraffe (the zoo is located nearby) and book (well... maybe because muscovites are such readers!) or maybe it is a photo album .

Theme Day: Open Air Market

Not your average open air market!

This woman is selling lemons, three kinds of seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, and I'm not sure what the third is), and hair accessories. She has simply set up her stand outside of a metro station, so that passersby might be tempted to buy a snack! All of the food probably comes from her dacha (country house), and she's selling it to make some extra money.
I bought a couple of lemons, and they were tasty :)

I Am Afraid of the Museums
