Sergey Radonezhsky Church in Rogozhskaya Sloboda

Sergey Radonezhsky Church in Rogozhskaya Sloboda

The first mentioning of wooden church constructed here is dated 1625. During the Russian-French war of 1812 it was plundered and burnt. The building which you see in the photo was constructed in 1818, sponsored by state official Smoliansky, who presented almost all his money into the project. The belfry was added in 1864.

It was very rich and important church. Gorgeous collection of icons decorated the walls and its chorus of blind singers was famous all over the city.

It was closed in 1938 with usual tragic consequences and returned to the church in 1991.
